In 2009 we’ll offer our guests some new possibilities so that the impression of the great North will be even stronger. One is to take part in our 9-day nature photography and digital picture processing workshop between Tromsø and North Cape/Honningsvåg - The North Cape Digital Photo Workshop.

The area we'll sail will cover a wide variety of landscapes and scenery, from the plains and the plateaus of Finnmark to the Alpine mountain ranges in Troms. There will be islands, fjords, sounds, hidden coves, glaciers, anchorages and also a very rich bird life, especially in the areas where the big bird sanctuaries are. In ex in Gjessværstappan there is estimated to be more than 2 000 000 birds of different kinds - puffins, sea eagles, northern gannets, seagulls, cormorants and many more. The light will be more than changing, so all in all the area will be a real challenge - and a HUGE inspiration - to develop your photographic skills! And you can use your camera 24 hours a day - without a tripod............

The well known Norwegian photographer Kjell Ove Storvik will be the workshop coach. He is a photographer with a background from both fine art and photojournalistic work. For the last 15 years he has worked as an expedition photographer in The Arctic and The Antarctic. His pictures have been published in Time Magazine, GEO, National Geographic and New York Times. Storvik lives and works in The Lofoten Islands in  Norway, and  his work is influenced by the attraction to the Sub-Polar and Polar environments.  Storvik has illustrated more than 30 books, and his fine art work has been regularly exhibited in galleries in Norway. For the last six years Storvik has been involved with AMASE, an expedition program that provides analogue testing of equipment going on future NASA and ESA Mars missions. Field work

The journey will take us to a number of quite special destinations along the coast from Tromsø to North Cape (Nordkapp). A brief look at a detailed map will tell you that a lot of places can only be reached by boat or eventually overland by walking there. Most of the area is really remote, where visitors seldom set their footprints. Once we have spotted a good location and head for the shore, be avare that there are seldom any paths and the terrain can be pretty rough.Usually a smal backpack is the safest way to carry your camera equipment, along with spare clothing. With a backpack you have the hands free and it is much easier and safer to cope with the challenges of the terrain.

Camera equipment

Personally Kjell Ove prefers to use a 35 mm digital SLR camera with a set of lenses for any field trip that includes walking, no matter if it is a short or longer trip. That enables him to work quite spontanious, depending on the changing landscape, light and different subjects of interest. A 35 mm digital equipment is also very practical working from the deck of the ship. 24 hours of daylight will make the landscape around us change fast, - the ship anchored in a bay or moving along.

Workflow

A portable computer with good photographic software is handy to process the images. We will go through a complete setup from preparing your camera, processing images and ways of storing them. There is a number of good programs for processing digital images. Processing in most cases simply means to adjust the image according to your preferences. Using digital images that makes the number of possibilities almost endless. We will first of all handle the basics, like good contrast and colours, converting to black and white, sharpness etc. Then we will look into enhancing colours, or to desaturate the colours and a few other things that can show you new possibilities with your own work.
